Theaimofthisstudywastoinvestigatetheindependentassociationsamongcardiorespiratory?tness,metabolicsyndrome(MetS), andC-reactiveprotein(CRP)inchildren.Thesampleconsistedof112children(11.4 ± 0.4years).Datawasobtainedforchildren’s anthropometry,cardiorespiratory?tness,MetScomponents,andCRPlevels.MetSwasde?nedusingcriteriaanalogoustothe AdultTreatmentPanelIIIde?nition.AMetSriskscorewasalsocomputed.PrevalenceoftheMetSwas5.4%,withoutgender di?erences. Subjects with low ?tness showed signi?cantly higher MetS risk (P 0.001) and CRP (P 0.007), compared to thehigh-?tnesspupils.However,di?erencesinMetSrisk,andCRPbetween?tnessgroupsdecreasedwhenadjustedforwaist circumference.Thesedataindicatethatthemechanismslinkingcardiorespiratory?tness,MetSriskandin?ammationinchildren areextensivelya?ectedbyobesity.Interventionstrategiesaimingatreducingobesityandimprovingcardiorespiratory?tnessin childhoodmightcontributetothepreventionoftheMetSinadulthood. 1.Introduction children are independent or partly due to the mediating e?ect of obesity, since the existing data are limited and equivocal[5,6].
