Until now, this optimization has focused mainly on the ef?- ciency and stability of the head curve through better control of the recirculation and through reduction of secondary ?ows. As a matter of fact, the cavitation is also a major limiting factor in pump design. Nevertheless, only few attempts to improve cavi- tation in pumps by using numerical approaches have been made. Most of the time, this optimization is limited to ?ner adaptation of vane inlet angles based on the predicted ?ow angles obtained fromanalysisofcavitationfree?owcomputational?uiddynam- ics (CFD) and to improvement of the pro?ling of the vanes in order to limit the minimum pressure (Spring,′ 1992). In recent decades, models for the prediction of cavitation have been re?ned and successfully applied on isolated two- dimensionalpro?lesforsteady?ows(DupontandAvellan,1991; Favre et al., 1987; Lemonnier and Rowe, 1988; Uhlman, 1983; Ukon, 1980) and for unsteady ?ows (Delannoy, 1989; Delannoy and Kueny, 1990; Kubota et al., 1989, 1992).
