Inrecentyears,accumulatingexperimentalevidencesupportsthenotionthatdiabeticpatientsmaygreatlybene?tfromcell-based therapies,whichincludetheuseofadultstemand/orprogenitorcells.Inparticular,mesenchymalstemcellsandthecirculating poolofendothelialprogenitorcellshavesofarbeenthemoststudiedpopulationsofcellsproposedforthetreatmentofvascular complicationsa?ectingdiabeticpatients.Wereviewtheevidencesupportingtheiruseinthissetting,thetherapeuticbene?tsthat thesecellshaveshownsofaraswellasthechallengesthatcell-basedtherapiesindiabeticcomplicationsputout. 1.Introduction complications,andthechallengesthatcell-basedtherapiesin DMpresent. Theworldwideincreaseintheprevalenceofdiabetesmellitus reinforcesthesearchforsolutionstopreventitaswellasto opposethedevelopmentandtheprogressionofitscomplica- tions.Particularly,theincreasingprevalenceofdiabetesmel- litus(DM)nowa?ectsadolescentsandyoungeradults,thus promoting an earlier development of invalidating chronic diseases[1].Experimentalevidencesuggeststhatcell-based therapies might represent a new and promising strategy for the treatment of diabetic vascular complic
