Methods:Weperformedaretrospectiveanalysisofironmetabolism(IM)variables(serumlevelsofiron,transferrin,ferritin, andTSCforTransferrinSaturationCoefficient)inacohortof694ALSpatientsand297healthycontrols. Results: Serum ferritin levels and TSC were higher, whereas serum transferrin levels were lower in ALS patients than controls.Inaddition,patientswithahighlevelserumferritinhadashortersurvivaltimecomparedtothosewithlowlevel serumferritin(618daysversus921daysformensubgroup;p=.007).SiteofonsetandALS-FRSscorewerenotassociated withIMvariables. Conclusion:ThisstudysuggeststhatALSpatientsmayhaveincreasedironstorage,asmeasuredbyincreasedserumferritin andTSC.ElevatedserumferritinmayalsohaveadeleteriousimpactonsurvivalinALS.
