Methods:Theassociationsofbodymassindex(BMI)asanindicatorofoveralladiposityandwaistcircumference andwaist-to-heightandwaist-to-hipratiosasabdominalobesityindiceswithmetabolicriskfactorsandhigh resolutionB-modeultrasound-determinedcarotidarteryatherosclerosiswereassessedinmultivariateregression modelsin203AfricanwomenwithestablishedRA;108wereblackand95Caucasian. Results:BMIandwaist-to-heightratiowerehigherinAfricanblackcomparedtoCaucasianwomen(29.9(6.6) versus25.3(4.9)kg/m2,P=0.002and0.59(0.09)versus0.53(0.08),P=0.01,respectively).Interactionsbetween populationoriginandanthropometricmeasureswerenotrelatedtometabolicriskfactorsbutwereassociated withatherosclerosis,independentofconfoundersandindividualterms.Inallpatients,BMIwasrelatedtosystolic anddiastolicbloodpressurebutnotwithserumlipidconcentrationswhereasabdominalobesityindiceswere associatedwithserumlipidconcentrationsbutnotwithbloodpressurevalues;obesitymeasuresthatwere associatedwithplasmaglucoseconcentrationscomprisedBMI,waistcircumferenceandwaist-to-heightratio(P 0.05inmultipleconfounderadjustedanalysis).InAfricanCaucasianwomen,BMIwasassociatedwithcommon carotidarteryintima-mediathickness(standardizedb(95%confidenceinterval(CI))=0.21(0.03to0.38))andwaist- to-hipratiowithplaque(oddsratio(OR)(95%CI)=1.83(1.03t
