However, very few seeds (3.6%) can germinate on unflooded soil. The seed-rain season is prolonged by temporalvariabilityinseeddispersalamongindividuals,whichensuresthatseedlingemergencecanoccurduringfavorable conditions(i.e.,floodsandrainfall).Asaresultofwatershortageandriverchannelingduetowaterusageandalteredriver flows,therearenosafesitesonriverbanksforseedgermination,whichhasledtothefailureofP.euphraticatoregenerate fromseed.RootsuckersofP.euphraticawerepresentin86%oftheforestgapsinvestigated.However,extensivegrazing hasdestroyedmanyofthemandthushasreducedthisformofregeneration.Thisresearchsuggeststhathumanactivities areresultinginthefailureofP.euphraticatoregenerate.Changesinlandmanagementsuchasreduceduseofconcrete canalsinPopulusforestsand/orreducedsheepgrazingintheseareasmaypromotetheirregeneration.
