However,ithasbeenshownthatsniffinginthebehavingrodentishighlydynamicandvariesbothinfrequencyandflow rate.Bulbarodorresponsecouldvarywiththesesniffingparametervariations.Consequently,itisnecessarytounderstand hownasalairflowcanmodifyandshapeodorresponseattheolfactorybulblevel. MethodologyandPrincipalFindings:Toassessthisquestion,weusedadoublecannulationandsimulatednasalairflow protocol on anesthetized rats to uncouple nasal airflow from animalrespiration. Bothmitral/tufted cell extracellular unit activityandlocalfieldpotentials(LFPs)wererecorded.Wefoundthatairflowchangesinthenormalrangeweresufficientto substantiallyreorganizetheresponseoftheolfactorybulb.Inparticular,cellularodor-evokedactivities,LFPoscillationsand spikephase-lockingtoLFPswerestronglymodifiedbynasalflowrate. Conclusion:Ourresultsindicatetheimportanceofreconsideringthenotionofodorcodingasodorresponseatthebulbar levelisceaselesslymodifiedbyrespiratorydynamics.
