TTRexertsalsoafunctionalroleinthepancreaspromotinginsulinreleaseandprotectingβ-cellsfromdeath. OurobjectivewastoidentifyaproteinthatcouldbeusedasadiagnosticmarkerofT1Dfordeterminingdisease progressionandmonitoringat-riskpatients.WepostulatethatserologicalTTRlevelswouldbereducedinT1DMAP exposedpatients.OurhypothesisisbasedontheobservationofcasesofT1DpatientswithdecreasedTTRlevels besidethereducedTTRplasmalevelsinovineswithJohne’ sdisease. WequantifiedtheplasmaproteinlevelsofTTRin50peoplewithT1Dand51age-matchedhealthycontrols(HCs) bymeansofenzyme-linkedimmunosorbentassays(ELISA). Findings:OurpilotstudyshowedthatplasmaTTRlevelswerenotsignificantlylower/higherinT1DSardiniancases comparedtotheHCs. Conclusion:ThesepreliminarydataindicatethatplasmaTTRmaynotbeagoodcandidatebiomarkerforT1D diagnosisandfurtherstudiestoelucidatethepossiblelinkareneeded.
