SearchingPubMedduringaPandemic OleNorgaard1,2,JeffreyV.Lazarus2,3 * 1NationalCentreforHealthPromotionandDiseasePrevention,NationalBoardofHealth,Copenhagen,Denmark,2WorldHealthOrganizationRegionalOfficeforEurope, Copenhagen,Denmark,3CopenhagenSchoolofGlobalHealth,CopenhagenUniversity,Copenhagen,Denmark Abstract Background:The2009influenzaA(H1N1)pandemichasgeneratedthousandsofarticlesandnewsitems.However,finding relevantscientificarticlesinsuchrapidlydevelopinghealthcrisesisamajorchallengewhich,inturn,canaffectdecision- makers’abilitytoutiliseup-to-datefindingsandultimatelyshapepublichealthinterventions.Thisstudysetouttoshowthe impactthattheinconsistentnamingofthepandemiccanhaveonretrievingrelevantscientificarticlesinPubMed/MEDLINE. Methodology: We first formulated a PubMed search algorithm covering different names of the influenza pandemic and simulatedtheresultsthatitwouldhaveretrievedfromweeklysearchesforrelevantnewrecordsduringthefirst10weeksof thepandemic.Toassesstheimpactoffailingtoincludeeveryterminthissearch,wethenconductedthesamesearchesbut omittedinturn‘‘h1n1,’’‘‘swine,’’‘‘influenza’’and‘‘flu’’fromthesearchstring,andcomparedtheresultstothoseforthefull string. PrincipalFindings:Onaverage,ourcoresearchstringidentified44.3potentiallyrelevantnewrecordsattheendofeach week.Ofthese,wedeterminedthatanaverageof27.8recordswererelevant.Whenweexcludedonetermfromthestring, thepercentageofrecordsmissedoutofthetotalnumberofrelevantrecordsaveraged18.7%foromitting‘‘h1n1,’’13.6%for ‘‘swine,’’17.5%for‘‘influenza,’’and20.6%for‘‘flu.’’ Conclusions:Duetoinconsistentnaming,whilesearchingforscientificmaterialaboutrapidlyevolvingsituationssuchas theinfluenzaA(H1N1)pandemic,thereisariskthatonewillmissrelevantarticles.Toaddressthisproblem,theinternational scientificcommunityshouldagreeonnomenclatureandthespecificnametobeusedearlier,andtheNationalLibraryof MedicineintheUScouldindexpotentiallyrelevantmaterialsfasterandallowpublisherstoaddalerttagstosuchmaterials.
