Liraetal.Diabetology MetabolicSyndrome2010,2:7 /content/2/1/7 RESEARCH OpenAccess SedentarysubjectshavehigherPAI-1and lipoproteinslevelsthanhighlytrainedathletes FabioSLira1*,JoseCRosa1,AdrianoELima-Silva2,HélioASouza3,EricoCCaperuto3,MaríliaCSeelaender3, AnaRDamaso4,LilaMOyama4,RonaldoVTSantos4* Abstract Physicalexerciseprotectsagainstthedevelopmentofcardiovasculardisease,partlybyloweringplasmatictotal cholesterol,LDL-cholesterolandincreasedHDL-cholesterollevels.Inaddition,itisnowestablishedthatreduction plasmaticadiponectinandincreasedC-reactiveprotein(CRP)andplasminogenactivatorinhibitor-1(PAI-1)levels playaroleinthemaintenanceofaninflammatorystateandinthedevelopmentofcardiovasculardisease.This studyaimedtoexamineplasmalipidprofileandinflammatorymarkerslevelsinindividualwithsedentarylifestyle and/orhighlytrainedathletesatrest.Methods:Fourteenmalesubjects(sedentarylifestylen=7andhighlytrained athletesn=7)wererecruited.Bloodsampleswerecollectedafteranovernightfast(~12h).Theplasmaticlipid profile(Triglycerides,HDL-cholesterol,LDL-cholesterol,totalcholesterol,LDL-oxidizedandtotalcholesterol/HDL-c ratio),glucose,adiponectin,C-reactiveproteinandPAI-1levelsweredetermined.Results:Totalcholesterol,LDL- cholesterol,TGandPAI-1levelswerelowerinhighlytrainedathletesgroupinrelationtosedentarysubjects(p 0.01).Inaddition,weobservedapositivecorrelationbetweenPAI-1andtotalcholesterol(r=0.78;p0.0009),PAI- 1andLDL-c(r=0.69;p0.006)andPAI-1andTGlevels(r=0.56;p0.03).Theplasmaconcentrationofadipo- nectin,CRP,glucose,HDL-cholesterolandtotalcholesterol/HDL-cratiolevelswerenotdifferent.Theseresultsindi- catethatlifestyleassociatedwithhighintensityandhighvolumeexerciseinduceschangesfavourableinthelipid profileandPAI-1levelsandmayreduceriskcardiovasculardiseases.
