MethodsandFindings:After2baselinenightsof8hourstimeinbed(TIB),13healthyyoungmenhadonly4hoursTIBper nightfor5nights,followedby2recoverynightswith8hoursTIB.6controlsubjectshad8hoursTIBpernightthroughout theexperiment.Heartrate,bloodpressure, salivarycortisolandserum C-reactiveprotein(CRP)weremeasuredafter the baseline(BL),sleeprestriction(SR)andrecovery(REC)period.Peripheralbloodmononuclearcells(PBMC)werecollectedat these time points, counted and stimulated with PHA. Cell proliferation was analyzed by thymidine incorporation and cytokineproductionbyELISAandRT-PCR.CRPwasincreasedafterSR(145%ofBL;p,0.05),andcontinuedtoincreaseafter REC (231% of BL; p,0.05). Heart rate was increased after REC (108% of BL; p,0.05). The amount of circulating NK-cells decreased(65%ofBL;p,0.005)andtheamountofB-cellsincreased(121%ofBL;p,0.005)afterSR,butthesecellnumbers recovered almost completely during REC.
