Abstract
Background:Promotingoralhealthofadolescentsisimportantforimprovementoforalhealthglobally.Thisstudy
usedbaseline-datafromLASH-projecttargetingsecondarystudentsto;1)assessfrequencyofpoororalhygiene
statusandoralimpactsondailyperformances,OIDP,bysocio-demographicandbehaviouralcharacteristics,
2)examinewhethersocio-economicandbehaviouralcorrelatesoforalhygienestatusandOIDPdifferedbygender
and3)examinewhethersocio-demographicdisparityinoralhealthwasexplainedbyoralhealth-relatedbehaviours.
Methods:Cross-sectionalstudywasconductedin2009usingone-stageclustersamplingdesign.Totalof2412
students(meanage15.2yr)completedself-administeredquestionnaires,whereas1077(meanage14.9yr)
underwentdental-examination.Bivariateanalyseswereconductedusingcross-tabulationsandchi-squarestatistics.
Multiplevariableanalyseswereconductedusingstepwisestandardizedlogisticregression(SLR)withoddsratios
and95%Confidenceintervals(CI).
Results:44.8%presentedwithfairtopoorOHISand48.2%reportedanyOIDP.Olderstudents,thosefromlow
socio-economicstatusfamilies,hadparentswhocouldn’tafforddentalcareandhadloweducational-level
reportedoralimpacts,poororalhygiene,irregulartoothbrushing,lessdentalattendanceandfewerintakesof
sugar-sweeteneddrinksmorefrequentlythantheircounterparts.Stepwiselogisticregressionrevealedthat
reportinganyOIDPwasindependentlyassociatedwith;olderage-groups,parentsdonotafforddentalcare,
smokingexperience,nodentalvisitsandfewerintakesofsugar-sweetenedsoftdrinks.Behaviouralfactors
accountedpartlyforassociationbetweenlowfamilySESandOIDP.LowfamilySES,nodentalattendanceand
smokingexperienceweremostimportantinmales.LowfamilySESandfewerintakesofsugar-sweetenedsoft
