Several research challengeshavebeenfacedandissuestackledinordertorealizeeffectiveapplicationsfor themanagementandmonitoringofpeoplewithchronicdiseases,peoplewithdisabilities, elderly people. However, there is a lack of ef?cient tools that enable rapid and possibly cheaprealizationofreliablehealthmonitoringapplications. ThepaperpresentsUranus ,a serviceorientedmiddlewarearchitecture,whichprovidesbasicfunctionsfortheintegration of different kinds of biomedical sensors. Uranus has also distinguishing characteristics like services for the run-time veri?cation of the correctness of running applications and mechanismsfortherecoveryfromfailures. Thepaperconcludeswithtwocasestudiesas proofofconcept. Keywords: vital signs monitoring; AAL; middleware services; rapid-prototyping; dependability 1.Introduction Ambientintelligenceconcernsasoftwaresystem’sabilitytobesensitive,adaptive,andresponsive tochangesinthephysicalenvironment[1]. AmItechnologiesareincreasingly?ndinguseinmedical applicationsinlocationssuchashospitalsandelderlyhomes,aswitnessedbyactivitiesandcommunities suchas[2–6],etc. On the other hand, wearable sensor technologies have made remarkable improvements during the last decade and have attracted the interest of stakeholders from different domains like, as an Sensors2012,12 3146 example, healthcare. In this context, we have assisted in the creation of a new class of systems, the wearable
