Methods:FromfivepatientscellularHIV-1infectionlevelswerequantifiedbeforeandafterinitiationoftherapy(2- 5weeks).ThroughsequencingtheC2V3regionoftheHIV-1gp120envelope,westudiedtheeffectofshort-term therapyonvirusvariantsderivedfromna?ve,centralmemoryandeffectormemoryCD4+ lymphocytesubsets. Results:Duringshort-termART,HIV-1infectionlevelsdeclinedinalllymphocytesubsetsbutnotasmuchasRNA levelsinserum.Virusdiversityinthena?veandcentralmemorylymphocytepopulationsremainedunchanged, whilstdiversitydecreasedinserumandtheeffectormemorylymphocytes.ARTdifferentiallyaffectedthevirus populationsco-circulatinginoneindividualharboringadualHIV-1infection.ChangesinV3chargewerefoundin allindividualsafterARTinitiationwithincreaseswithintheeffectormemorysubsetanddecreasesfoundinthe na?vecellpopulation. Conclusions:DuringearlyARTvirusdiversityisaffectedmainlyintheserumandeffectormemorycell compartments.DifferentialalterationsinV3chargewereobservedbetweeneffectormemoryandna?ve populations.WhilecertaincellpopulationscanbetargetedpreferentiallyduringearlyART,somevirusstrains demonstratevariedsensitivitytotherapy,asshownfromstudyingtwostrainswithinadualHIV-1infected individual. Background likelihood ofviremia andemergenceofresistance, pro- Antiretroviraltherapy(ART)hasproventobesuccessful phylactic and/or short-term therapeutic use largely against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) bypasses these disadvantages and more treatment and res
