Methods:Along-termdatabase,whichcontainedover30000machinedayrecordsandwasmaintainedbya Chileanforestcompany,wasusedtoevaluatetheeffectsofthreetypesofextendedworkschedules(beyonda9 hourworkday)ontheproductivityoftwotypesofharvestingoperations;mechanisedprocessingofPinusradiata D.Don(radiatapine)stemsintologsandmechanisedharvestingofeucalypt(EucalyptusglobulusLabillandE.nitens H.DeaneandMaiden)trees. Results:Productionincreasedasworkinghoursincreased.However,averagehourlyproductivityfellby9to30%as theworkingdaylengthforequipmentwasextendedfrom9to18hours.Arangeoffactors,someinteracting,were foundtoaffectthelevelofdecrease.Thesefactorsincludedtypeofworkschedule,typeofoperation,season,tree species,andtreesize. Conclusions:Extendingworkinghoursbeyond9hoursperdaydidnotresultinequivalentincreasesinproduction formechanizedharvestingoperationsinChile.Furtherresearchisneededontheoveralleconomicsofworking extendedhours.
