Abstract
Background:Physicalactivitymayreducetheriskofadversematernaloutcomes,yetthereareveryfewstudies
thathaveexaminedthecorrelatesofexerciseamongstobesewomenduringpregnancy.Weexaminedwhich
relevantsociodemographic,obstetric,andhealthbehaviourvariablesandpregnancysymptomswereassociated
withexerciseinasmallsampleofobesepregnantwomen.
Methods:Thiswasasecondaryanalysisusingdatafromanexerciseinterventionforthepreventionofgestational
diabetesinobesepregnantwomen.UsingthePregnancyPhysicalActivityQuestionnaire(PPAQ),50obese
pregnantwomenwereclassifiedas“Exercisers”iftheyachieved≥900kcal/wkofexerciseand“Non-Exercisers”if
theydidnotmeetthiscriterion.Analysesexaminedwhichrelevantvariableswereassociatedwithexercisestatusat
12,20,28and36weeksgestation.
Results:Obesepregnantwomenwithahistoryofmiscarriage;whohadchildrenlivingathome;whohadalower
pre-pregnancyweight;reportednonauseaandvomiting;andwhohadnolowerbackpain,werethosewomen
whoweremostlikelytohaveexercisedinearlypregnancy.Exerciseinlatepregnancywasmostcommonamong
tertiaryeducatedwomen.
Conclusions:Offeringgreatersupporttowomenfromdisadvantagedbackgroundsandcloselymonitoring
womenwhoreportpersistentnauseaandvomitingorlowerbackpaininearlypregnancymaybeimportant.The
findingsmaybeparticularlyusefulforotherinterventionsaimedatreducingorcontrollingweightgaininobese
pregnantwomen.
