Abstract Abstract Traditional production factors are flawed in explaining the difference between different countries’ and regions’ economic growth and income level. The emergence of social capital theory provides a new train of thought to explain economic growth. Social capital has been proven to affect economic development through technological innovation. In this paper, we studied theoretical mechanism and empirical evidence of the social capital ’s effect on technological innovation and economic growth. Through theoretical analysis we found that social capital affects technological innovation mainly through trust, social networks and information sharing. Based on four basic properties of social capital, weeded social capital accumulation equation to the endogenous growth model based on the technology innovation, and added the social capital into the knowledge production function, aiming at building an economic growth model including social capital and technological innovation. The results were that social capital can affect economic growth through technological innovation. If social capital plays greater role on technology innovation, the innovation bodies may pay more attentions to the accumulation of social capital, social capital level rises faster. The increasing of social capital’ level can improve the efficiency of RD in the production of knowledge, and RD department will hire more RD personnel to promote economic growth.
