Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to compare the effects Results MMP-3 and MMP-9 gene expressions were of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1-beta upregulated to a greater level by IL-1β than TNF-α. MMP-13 (IL-1β) on protease and catabolic cytokine and receptor gene was upregulated by each cytokine to a similar extent. TNF-αand expression in normal and degenerate human nucleus pulposus TNF-R2 expressions were upregulated by both TNF-α and IL-β, cells in alginate culture.
