Human Resources ManagementMAN 2133Academic Year 2016/17IntroductionWelcome to Human Resouces Management (MAN 2133)A sound working knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of Human Resource Management, and of how these might be applied in the modern-day workplace, is essential for all serious management students and would-be managers.This module explores the essential elements of people management, from hiring staff, through giving them meaningful work to do, appraising their performance, rewarding them appropriately, training and developing them, and managing the all-important interface between the employer and the employees. It then goes on to look at a range of issues which are becoming ever more crucial to success in the modern world, including the approaches which are essential to ensuring competitive advantage in an increasingly globalised environment. Emerging themes which are becoming increasingly important in the 21st century include the management of knowledge workers, and the subtleties of managing people from differing cultural backgrounds, both individually and in groups and teams.The approach adopted in this module encourages you to study theory and practice side-by-side, in order to appreciate the applied nature of the subject matter, and the reality of what actually happens when the theoretical models meet the real world.There are many text books and articles available related to this subject area, and you are encouraged to read widely around the topic each week to enhance your knowledge and understanding.
