[英语学习]America Etiquette
American Business Etiquette By Li Lin E-mail: lilianlilin@ Topics Covered Greetings Punctuality Business attire (clothes) Public behavior Gift-giving etiquette Topics Covered Business-card etiquette Business entertaining/dining Seating etiquette Toasting etiquette Etiquette in the workplace Culture values This culture stresses individual initiative and achievement. The concept “time is money” is taken seriously in U.S. business culture. American business people are opportunistic and willing to take chances. Americans tend to dislike periods of silence during negotiations and conversations. Businesspeople are direct and will not hesitate to disagree with you. Persistent and consistent “universal” rules are preferred. U.S. is the most litigious society in the world. Many Americans have a limited knowledge of cultures beyond their own country and its own diverse subcultures. Americans like to laugh and enjoy being with people who have a sense of humor. Compliments are exchanged frequently and are popular “conversation starters.” Sports are popular in the U.S., especially baseball, football and basketball. Golf is another popular sport, especially among business people. Greetings The order of most names is first name, middle name, and last name. Americans will insist on using first names almost immediately. Use titles such as “Dr.”, “Mr.”, “Miss”, Mrs.”, or “Ms.”, followed by the last name. Punctuality After this section, you should be able to know: When to arrive on business and non-business occasions What to do when you know you will be late for a meeting or an appointment Where to sit at a meeting The importance of punctuality On non-business occasions, most Americans expect that guests will arrive at the appointed time or perhaps a few minutes later. In the case of attending a meeting, arrive on time --- not too early, and certainly not late. When invited to a cocktail party, it’s usually permissible to arrive a few minutes late.
