Chinese American literature, which refers to the writings written in English by Chinese people born in American, is a growing new field. It plays an important role in American Literature. So it is necessary for us to have an overview of the history of Chinese American literature. Chinese American literature already has a history of over 100 years. In a long period of years, Chinese American literature sees a difficult stage from the edge of the culture to mainstream culture. Chinese American literature can be traced back to the late nineteenth century when gold rush happened in California. Many people left their families and homes to take participate in the gold-kicking rush for seeking for fortune, but to their disappointed, seeking for fortune was an unimaginable dream in that they were given many discriminations. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, which made Chinese American people increasingly unwelcome in California. In this case, they had no other options but suffered hardships. But for making a live they had to find job, good and high wage job were not given to them, only some lower wage job could be provided with such as laundry workers, which resulted in their life being poor. Moreover, owing to the persecution of discrimination and little-educated, they could not have opportunities to stand on the scene of literature. It was not until 1943 when the Second World War brought out; the Chinese Exclusion Act was abolished, many Chinese American people had the privilege that American citizens had.
