The intercept is where you are now. It is right here at this time point and at this place. * Where is the intercept going in the future? Where do you want it to be? * Why we chose the distance education format? It is based on two major aspects, non-instructional and instructional. * Let’s start with the non-instructional reasons. Three of them are related to ecology, economy, and health. Each of these will be described later. * (Ecologically) Cut down carbon footprint…(self elaborated) * (Economically) This is how much we consume a day in the States. * When we are economizing, D.E. allows you more time for the family. No need to hire a babysitter. * Another economic reason is classes are filled up quick. * D.E. classes are filled up quick because students do not need to spend time driving to class. This saves time and of course money. * Texas state government has mandated that by 2014 more K-12 courses are going online. This is primarily for the economic purposes. * (Health-related) D.E. limits human physical contacts, which cuts down the chances to contract contagious diseases, like seasonal flu. * Unfortunately, epidemics can happen. * Those are non-instructional. Now let’s switch the gear…what about instructional reasons? What are instructional reasons that push us toward D.E.? How People Learn—Star Legacy Module is a joint research effort by Vanderbilt University and others. The module defines how people learn effectively. See the link below for the visuals. /hpl/chalcycle.htm The module points out one single important step in the learning process…interacting with outside experts. * Nowadays D.E. has better tools than ever before, which help develop a better learning environment. Web 2.0 and cloud computing (Google Docs)…are just two examples. More importantly, these tools allow external experts to participate in the student learning. The instructor may not be an expert in many areas, but what s/he can do to help the class is to bring in outside experti
