Teaching Vocabulary Lecture 12 Luo Xiaojie 词汇教学 第十二讲 主讲人:罗晓杰 Denotative meaning of a word those words that we use to label things as regards real objects – the primary meaning of a word. Connotative meaning of a word ‘the attitudes or emotions of a language user in choosing a word and the influence of these on the listener or reader’s interpretation of the word (Hedge: 2000:112) Collocations words that co-occur with high frequency and have been accepted as ways for the use of words. Teaching word collocations is a more effective way than just teaching one single word at a time. Synonyms items that mean the same, or nearly the same. Antonyms items that mean the opposite of a word. Hyponyms words which can be grouped under the same, superordinate concept. Receptive/passive vocabulary words that one is able to recognize and comprehend in reading or listening but unable to use automatically in speaking or writing. Those words that one is not only able to recognize but also able to use in speech and writing are considered as one’s productive/active vocabulary. ways to present vocabulary Try to provide a visual or physical demonstration whenever possible, using pictures, photos, video clips, mime or gestures to show meaning. ways to present vocabulary Provide a verbal context to demonstrate meaning. Then ask students to tell the meaning first before it is offered by the teacher. ways to present vocabulary Use synonyms or antonyms to explain meanings ways to present vocabulary Use lexical sets or hyponyms to show relations of words and their meanings, e.g. cook: fry, boil, bake, grill, etc. ways to present vocabulary Translate and exemplify, especially with technical words or words with abstract meaning. ways to present vocabulary Use word formation rules and common affixes to build new lexical knowledge on what is already known. ways to present vocabulary Teaching vocabulary in chunks.
