dreams,thebreakingofthedreams,andthewayinwhichthosewhitepeople’s economicexploitationonfourgenerationsofChinamen:thegreatgrandfatherofthe SandalwoodMountains,thegrandfatheroftheSierraNevadaMountains,the Americanfather,andthebrotherinVietnam.Theharshworkingandliving environmentformvividcontrasttothesuperficialparadiseaccordingtothevillagers whohadevercometotheGoldMountain.Eachofthefourgenerationstandsforone kindofprimordialexperienceintheUnitedStateswhosuffersnothingbutendlesstoil and exploitation.ChaptertwodiscussesAmericanpeople’sisolationandexclusiontotheChinese immigrantsandthereasonsbehind.Itexploresissuesofthehypocriticalandinjustice lawsthatregulateandlimittheentryofChineseintoAmericaandtheirabilityto applyforAmericacitizenship.ItexplainsindetailwhyChinamen’slanguagepower isdeprivedandthespiritualoppressionleadtothedistortioninpersonality.Thispart iscentrallyconcernedwiththeborderlineidentityofthoseimmigrants.Itishardfor thedescendantsofthoseChineseAmericanstosettlebalancebetweenthetwo cultures, since they are denied by both.ChapterthreeexaminesthegenderdistortionanddepreciationofChinese Americans.Malecharactersareemasculatedintheprocessofcontributingtothe constructionofAmericabyemployingfemalejobs,andleadingabachelorlife. ChineseAmericanwomenareexcludedfromthecenterofpower,sufferingfroma double oppression fromtheir status of women and their minority identity.Finally,basedupontheabovediscussion,thisthesiscomestothefollowing conclusion:ChinesesojournersandimmigrantsinAmericaarenotinparadisebutin dilemma.ItistheoppressionofsexismandracismthatmakestheChinese-American historyofstruggleintothehistoryofdisaster.Onlybyfusingtheeasternandwestern culturetosetupacultural“thirdspace”cantheyconquertheinjusticesociety,and solve the inequity.
