AbstractStephenCrane(1871-1900),oneofthemostdistinguishedAmericannovelistsinthenineteenthcentury,makesindeliblecontributionstothedevelopmentofAmericanliterature.Heleavesusalargenumberofimportantworkswithinhisshortlife.TheRedBadgeofCourage,oneofhismasterpiecespublishedin1895,isacknowledgedasoneoftheclassicalworksofAmericanliterature.Thisnovelhasbeenwidelyresearchedbyacademiasinceitspublication.Thesestudiespayattentiontointerpretingthehintofnaturalism,impressionism,realism,symbolismortherelatedthemesofthenovel.Butscantystudyhasbeencarriedoutfromecologicalethicsperspective.Accordingly,thisthesisattemptstoobserveandstudythenovelfromecologicalethicsperspectivebasedontheexistentresearchesandexcavatethethematicmeaningsconcernedwithnature,societyandselfwiththeaimtocomprehendtheabundantthoughtofCraneandhisworksfromanewangle.SinceitsemergeninEnglandandAmericainthe1990s,ecocriticismhasbecomeatypeofliterarycriticalschool,whichrapidlycomesintoacademia’sconcerns.Ecologicalethicsisamoraltheoryabouttherelationshipbetweenmanandnature.Itisakindofethicswhichconductshowpeopleregardecologicalvalue,howpeopleharmoniouslycoexistwithbiologicaltribes,andhowpeopleadjusttherelationshipbetweenmanandenvironment.Asanobservantandthoughtfulnaturalistwriter,StephenCranerevealshisethicalconsiderationofnature,societyandselfinTheRedBadgeofCourage.ThisthesisattemptstoobservethethematicmeaningsconcernedwiththethreeelementsembeddedinTheRedBadgeofCourage.Fromtheangleofnaturalecology,ChapteroneexaminesCrane’sdescriptionofnatureasanindifferentandhostilenonhumanbackdrop,inwhichhumanbeingsstruggleaimlesslylikeanimalsandanonymousmonsters.Suchkindofnonhumannatureexposesthesurvivalplightandecologicalcrisisinthewesternsocietyinthelate19thcentury.ButthedescriptionofharmoniousnatureandHenryFleming’sspeculationforharmoniousnatureattheendofthenovelconveysCrane’santicipationofhumannature,andthisharmonioushumannaturesymbolizesAmericanpeople’sconfidenceinfuturelifeandaspirationforharmoniousecosphere.Fromtheangleofsociale
