AbstractTheclathratehydratesismadeupwiththehostwatercagewhichislinkedbyhydrogen-bondedandguestgasmolecules.Atpresent,moreandmoreattentionhavepaidontheuseofstoringandtransportingbytheclathratehydratesforH2.Inthispaper,thetheoreticalbasisisabinitiomethodofmolecularorbitaltheory,themethodisself-consistentfieldandelectronicstructurecalculations,investgatingthestructureandstabilityaboutwatercagecluster(H2O)12andthepossibilityoftheguestH2molecularcapturingandescapingbythehostwatercageatHF,MP2,CCSD(T)andDFTlevelwith6-311++G**basisset.InvestigatetheBondingmechanismandstabilityatB3LYP/6-311++G**levelemphasizely,andanalysisthegeometry,dissociationenergyandinteractionbetweenmolecularsandsoon.Theresultindicatedtheinteractionbetweennon-neighborsmolecularsleadtoshrinkageforwatercagecluster(H2O)12.Atthebasicofthestudyaboutthewatercage(H2O)12,meantimestudyingthestructureandstabilityoftheclathratehydratesH2-(H2O)12.Toanalyzetherespectivefeatureoftheclathratehydrates,theresultindicatethattheweakinteractionexistsbetweenthehostwatercageandtheguestH2molecules.SothestabilityoftheclathratehydratesH2-(H2O)12isstrongerthanthewatercage(H2O)12atnormaltemperatureandpressure.Atthebasicofthestructureandstabilityofclathratehydrates,openquestionsinthestudyarewhethertheH2guestmoleculescanmigratebetweentheclathratecagesandwhetherH2isreleasedfromtheclathrateonceitisformed.Electronic-structurecalculationsareusedtoestimatetheenergybarrierstotheescapeofH2guestmoleculesfromthecagesoftheclathratehydrates.Wehavecalculatedtheone-dimensionalenergyprofiletowardstotheH2moleculesmovingfromthecagecenterthroughthecenterofhexagonalfaces.TheenergybarrierscalculatedattheMP2levelwiththe6-311G*basisisetare2.751kcalmol-1.Theenergybarriersareusedtoestimatetheescaperatesfromthecage,tunnelingcontributionstotheescaperatesarealsoconsideredatthesametime.ThesestudiesindicatethatH2canmigratethroughclathratehydratesandthatkineticconsiderationscanbeveryimportantindeterminingthestructureandH2-storagecapacityofclathratehydrates.Ke
