聊城大学硕士学位论文 聊城大学硕士学位论文 ii ii ABSTRACT Zhang Boxing was a famous official in mid-late Kangxi period and early Yongzheng period of Qing dynasty. He was born in the 8th year of Shunzhi period (the year 1651) of Qing dynasty and had been Director of the Board of Rites. Knowledge Gained in Jining, one of his books, was a monograph on water conservancy concerning the harnessing of the Shandong reach of the Canal. The book was a summary of what he had learned from the harnessing of the Canal when he was the governor of Jining from the 42th to 45th year of Kangxi period. It accounts for the geography, water conservancy facilities, water supply, river channel management and harnessing of the Shandong reach of the Canal and the Yellow River, covering mainly his thinking about the construction of sluice gates, dykes, spring streams and lakes, retaining and sluicing methods, boat sailing methods, the administration of functional divisions on the river channel, etc. The book was not only a reflection on the harnessing of the Canal and the Yellow River and the water transportation management in the Qing Dynasty, but also one of the outcomes from the importance attached to the water transportation management and the river harnessing by rulers of the Qing dynasty. Zhang Boxing had always been seeking truth from facts, taking actions that suit occasions and local circumstances and put forward many ideas about river harnessing. Indeed, he “remedied abuses, studied and weighed situations, sticked to no conventions, followed no wrong ways, and thus won a good name of competentness”. He had always been adhering to the Qing government’s purpose of river harnessing and water transportation security, attaching importance to people’s interests, combining river harnessing with the benefits of both water transportation and peoples livelihood. It is for these reasons that he had made outstanding achievements in river harnessing and been recognized positively by the supreme ruler. Emperor Kangxi
