PAGE PAGE IV Abstract After the domination of Qing Dynasty was stabilized, Cheng-Zhu’s Philosophy (a school of Confucianism), was once again chosen as an official philosophy by the imperator rationally. Consequently, the wide roughscuff, especially the most unprivileged females lived miserable lives with their natural lusts being oppressed. During the late Ming Dynasty, the ideology circle had launched a campaign against Philosophy oppressing humanity and for the rationality of ardor, which led the liberation of humanity. Following the late Ming Dynasty, the strong romantic emotionalism pervaded both ideological realms and region of literature in the early Qing Dynasty. Under this cultural background, Strange tales from a Chinese Studio by Pusongling, came into being. “Pusongling is a master for revealing social evils and eulogizing love.” In Strange tales from a Chinese Studio, the love works occupies more than 1/3. During these works, the author Pusongling using the unreal subject matters, such as foxes and ghosts , conveys vividly the human beings’ natural emotions and lusts which are oppressed by “Justice”. He describes them poetically and praises them passionately. These works reflect common people’s true feelings, full of defiance of the feudal ethical codes and striving for freedom. This dissertation, basing on the previous researches and combining the method of computational historiography and traditional academic method macroscopically and microscopically, tries to make a comprehensive and systematical statistics and analysis on love tales in Strange tales from a Chinese Studio. The introduction part first briefly introduces the reason for choosing this perspective. Moreover, basing on the reviews of the researches on Strange tales from a Chinese Studio in academic circles, it proposes there are still some spaces to be explore, such as: the previous researches on case analysis isn’t sufficient and lack of comprehensive analysis; the reviews on past soci
