PAGE PAGE VI Absract Music is a performing art. Only after being interpreted by performers, music works can be enjoyed by appreciators, and their aesthetic values can be realized. Then, music performance holds a very important position. Since the division of music composition and performance, it is always the focus about how to deal with their relation. On the issue, there have been two different views through history. One opinion is that music performance should be faithful to the composer’s original intent, and the most important criterion for performance is whether the composer’s purpose and the meaning of works are expressed accuratly. The other one is that the composer’s purpose is incognizable, and for a given work, the so-called correct performance comlying with the composer’s intent doesn’t be existent, so a performer can play his initiative and creativity full freely. For the relation between performers and works, the former opion stresses on performers’ faithfulness to works, while the latter emphasizes on performers’ creativity. Then, music performance should be faithful to composers’ original intent, or resign itself to performers’ creativity? This essay attempts to hunt answers in Hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is a branch of philosophy which deals with interpretation, and it has a long history. The writer attempts to analysize the “Faithfulness Approach” and “Creativeness Approach”of music performance in angle of Hermeneutics, and finds out their black marks. Hans-Georg Gadamer holds on the diachronism and creativity of understanding. His concept “historical interpretation” gives a important premise to “Creativeness Approach”of music performance.
