Abstract With the accelerated process of industrialization and the expansion of city size in our country, the phenomenon of urban residential space differentiation has become more and more evident. Research on the topic of urban residential differentiation is full of meanings in multiple levels. It not only contributes to finding out underlying causes of social class differentiation by analyzing the phenomenon of urban residential segregation, but also helps to assess the level of harmonious degree between areas of one city and economic development in different cities with the method of grasping the residential differentiation patterns of different cities. Besides, it does good to providing feasible policy recommendations for the balanced development of urban living space by analyzing the motives and mechanism of the urban residential space differentiation. Therefore, study on urban residential differentiation, especially for the grasp of sensitive factors affecting the formation of urban residential differentiation, has important theoretical and practical significance on deepening our awareness of urban residential differentiation and its social implications, promoting exchanges and integration between different social classes, and even accelerating the process of urbanization, building a harmonious society full of fair and impartiality. First, based on mastering current research on urban residential differentiation after reading a lot of literature, I make use of gaps in research on relevant aspects of the urban residential differentiation to determine the direction and research ideas of this study. Second, I arrange concepts related to spatial differentiation of urban living space, patterns of urban residential differentiation and influence factors of urban residential differentiation, in order to obtain a theoretical basis. Third, Based on the theoretical analysis, I construct indicator system required for the model of urban residential differentiation patterns
