Different cultures can be presented not only verbally but also visually and aurally, and film is a poly-semiotic medium presenting a culture that transfers meaning through several channels, such as picture, dialogue and music. Items that are culture-specific tend to spread and encroach upon other cultures. Along with the trend of globalization and internet techniques, seeing foreign films, to some extent, has become an effective way of learning foreign languages and getting to know cultures, customs, and living styles of other countries. Showing English films in the audio-visual class is a typical example. Films from the US, or more exactly from Hollywood, are the ones with larger box office income and market share in China. The fact that a larger number of the most popular imported films in China come from the US, UK and other English-speaking countries reflects the influence of the Anglophone world on China and the film translation from English into Chinese becomes so important. Film translation can not be simply considered to be a conversion between different languages. It is a transposition into another context, not only linguistically, but also socially and culturally, so film translation is also seen as a cross-cultural transfer.
