Abstract Due to the seriousness, formalness and authority of political texts, the translators of political texts are required to stick to the original texts to attain faithfulness. But it is also advised that they be flexible to avoid translationese and make the translation smooth and easy to comprehend. The two seemingly contradictory requirements confused some translators who have to depend solely on their experience and instinct to do the job. To solve this problem the political translation is analyzed in the perspective of SFL by introducing the concepts of metafunction and context. It is then pointed out that being faithful means sticking to the major metafunction of original texts, while the minor metafunction could be changed if it can not be maintained. Consequently the two requirements are compatible and translators could find the major metafunction through the analysis of context and choose the right translation methods. It is also pointed out that there are some highly important context factors which need more attention in the context analysis of political translation. In culture context these factors are ideology, religions and beliefs, political systems and history. When analyzing situational context, the categorization of theme, sensitivity and issue time are critical in field; basic information of communicators, authority difference, roles and relations of communicators are crucial in tenor; communication way is the key in mode. It is desired that translators attach more importance to these factors in context analysis so as to decide the major metafunction. Then the analysis of context and major metafunction is applied to several C-E political translation cases in order to discuss the practicability of this method. The cases show us that the analysis of key contextual factors and major metafunctions is beneficial for translators to understand the meaning and choose appropriate translation strategies.
