2 2 Preface It’s a worldwide topic about the relationship between economic development and income distribution. Many development economists haven’t paid close attention on it until World War Ⅱ. Kuznets creatively analyzed the relationship between economic development and income gap, that is to say, the long-term trend of economic development. He theoretically analyzed the reason of the change of economic and the influence of economic structure on distribution of income. Then he reached an important hypothesis about the long-term change of income distribution, which is called Kuznets’ inverted U theory. As a big developing country, China’s economic development and income gap were concerned for a long time. It was usually talked about as a case that developed well but had a small income gap at the same time. Until to the mid-70’s, China’s economic field was stilled satisfied with this kind of recognition. However, with the deepening of reform, on the one hand, Chinese people’s living standard rose a lot; on the other hand, China’s income gap become an incontrovertible fact, which made academic circles begin to pay attention on this contradiction. Kuznets’ inverted U Theory offers us a standpoint to analyze: some scholars thought that this theory conform to China’s real condition, others held an adverse idea. This article is written under this circumstance. This article first introduced the inverted U theory, including the basic content of it and arguments about it, which is the basis of this article; At the second part of this article , through concrete evidence analysis of Chinese income gap、analysis of the condition and its characteristics, the writer concluded that Chinese income gap was so complex that it couldn’t be easily explained by Kuznets’ hypothesis.
