PAGE PAGE iv iii iii Abstract Teacher talk plays an important part in the second language classroom. However, the majority of the teachers, especially English teachers pay more attention to their own teaching plan and teaching tasks, rather than the students? expectation. Therefore, it needs to be studied that how to improve the students? language proficiency and communicative competence. First, the thesis describes the traits of the turn taking organization in the classroom discourse. Yielding turns and retaking the floor to invite student perform active part in classrooms are the main methods for the teachers to encourage the student to talk more, and the main pattern of turn-taking is the model of IRF. However, it has some limitations when the quality and the quantities of turn-taking to be considered. In addition, teachers still occupy the major classroom time, the research studies the types and the patterns of teachers? questions and the kinds of feedback in class with regard to generating appropriate teacher-student interaction. The thesis? aim is to find the effective way to let the teachers make good use of turn-taking, question types and feedback types to create student-orientated classroom atmosphere and enhance the students? communicative ability.
