When taking the mathematical programming approaches, the deviation from the practical situation normally becomes increasingly significant with a growing number of assumed factors, which leads to a considerable gap between the result and the actual network energy efficiency. However, the pinch technology proves to be a workaround. This thesis explains the optimization rules of the Heat Exchanger Network while introducing the pinch technology optimization process. Three fundamental laws must be obeyed at the pinch point: no heat transfer is allowed at the pinch point; no cooling utilities are allowed above the pinch point; and no heating utilities are allowed below the pinch point. When refining the pinch technology to avoid heat transfer at the pinch point, we must comply with the rules of Heat Capacity Rate and numbers of streams: the total number of cold streams below the pinch point NC is no more than the total number of hot streams NH, and the Heat Capacity Rate PCpc of the cold streams is no more than the Heat Capacity Rate PCph of the hot streams; Similarly, the total number of hot streams above the pinch point NH is no more than the total number of cold streams NC, and the Heat Capacity Rate PCph of the hot streams is no more than the Heat Capacity Rate PCpc of the cold streams. Any non-compliance requires a bypass flow to fix. In addition, the compliance with the rule of maximum heat load is required, where either one of the two streams needs to be completely exchanged in each matching.
