v vi Abstract popular scientific discourse according to the quantitative analysis of lexical cohesion. The analysis of stylistic features includes the following aspects: the degree of context-dependency, degree of formalness, and some features of rhetoric devices of popular scientific discourse. The analytic process follows the three-step stylistic analytic mode: discourse — analysis —explanation, which is put forward by Zhang Delu (2003) The mode can be adopted to analyze lexical cohesion and stylistic features because both lexical cohesion because both of them are parts of analysis of the analytic mode. In Chapter Five of the thesis, a sample analysis of lexical cohesion and stylistic features reflected by lexical cohesion in popular scientific discourse is presented. After the sample discourse analysis, ten selected popular scientific discourses are analyzed following the mode, but only the results of analysis are presented. According to the quantitative analysis of lexical cohesion in the ten selected popular scientific discourses, the author finds out that popular scientific discourse has the following lexical cohesive features: All the lexical cohesive devices are used with different frequencies and different cohesive forces; 2) Nominal chains are the longest lexical chains, have greatest density and have the strongest cohesive forces, and most lexical cohesive devices are used most frequently in the nominal chains; 3) Some lexical cohesive devices are mainly used in specific lexical chains. And According to the analysis of stylistic features reflected by lexical cohesion, it is concluded that popular scientific discourse has the following stylistic features: 1) narration, exactness, objectivity, and diversity of wording; 2) an important rhetoric device?contrast; 3) weak interpersonal function and low degree of context-dependency; 4) unimportant material process.
