The Experimental Study on the Effect of Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction on 5-HT and PGE2 of Rabbit’s Scapulohumeral periarthritis Abstract Scapulohumeral periarthritis also can be named as shoulder Bi-syndrome. The pathological changes may often involve muscles around shoulder joint, tendon, fascia, ligaments, synovial bursa, joint capsule and other soft tissue. Being manifested as diffuse pain in the shoulder area with restricted movement of the shoulder joint, this is a commonly seen degenerative disease. Scapulohumeral periarthritis in TCM is “Bi syndrome”category. Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction is famous internal medical formula which has the effect of warming meridians and dispersing coldness and relieving pain. However, the research of this formula focused on its therapeutic effect other than the mechanism of actions. Objective In this experiment, we took the intragastric administration with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction as a mean, observed the therapeutic effect of this formula in animal model with Scapulohumeral periarthritis and explore the mechanism. Methods 54 healthy New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into blank control group, model control group and medication treatment group, each group of 18. Except the blank control group, the animal model of periarthritis of shoulders due to wind-cold-dampness was made by continuous mechanical strain with ice. Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction juice was given orally to the rabbits. 6 rabbits in each group were randomly killed at the time points of 7 days, 14 days and 21 days respectively, and the content of 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) and prostaglandin E2(PGE2) in biceps, supraspinatus, infraspinatus nearly tendon part around the joint capsule were investigated by ELISA method. By observing the changes of the inflammatory factors in these tissues, we provide the experimental basis for treating periarthritis of shoulders with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction.
