AbstractFord Abstract Ford Madox Ford，an outstanding English novelist in the early twentieth century,intends to explore narrative forms and techniques in his literary creation．In writing his masterpiece The Good SoMier，Ford illustrates progression d’effet successfully． Progression deffet,in Ford’S words，is a literary technique，which contains two meanings：(1)every word used in a novel must carry the story forward；(2)the story must hold the reader’S interest．Progression deffet Can also be regarded as a‘‘vehicle’’that expresses the author’S thoughts． This thesis investigates progression d’effet in The Good SoMier．It consists of the introduction，the body and the conclusion．The introductory part presents a literature review of a general survey and the methodology to carry out the study． The body includes four chapters．Chapter one probes into the background and a detailed interpretation ofprogression deffet． Chapter two analyzes progression deffet in wording involving recurrent words or phrases and the evocmive images．With the use of images and recurrent words，the author shows the darkness and disorder of society SO as to let the story move forward． Chapter Chapter three focuses on progression deffet from the perspective of narratology．The author uses the achronological order and narrative frequency to carry the story forward by gradual provision of information． By doing this，the author attracts the attention of the reader，thus enriching the meaning of the story． Chapter four discusses progression d’effet in characterization．The conflict between appearance and reality reveals the complexity of characters and helps the reader to know their true faces with the progression of the story． The conclusion points out that progression deffet is not only a technical device that contributes to the growth of the story,but also plays an important role in enabling the reader to understand the profound meanings of the novel． Key Words：Ford Madox Ford；The Good Soldier；Progression deff
