哈尔滨工业大学理学硕士学位论文 哈尔滨工业大学理学硕士学位论文 - - PAGE IV - Abstract Delay differential equations are widely used in many science and engineering fields, such as control theory, population dynamics, electrical networks, environment science, biology, ecology, life science, economics, chemistry, computer aided design, analytic number theory, absorption of light by interstellar matter, nonlinear dynamics systems, Cherenkov radiation, the theory of dielectric materials, collection of current of an electric locomotive and so on. As we know, the subject of ordinary differential equations is as old as the subject of calculus, and the subject of delay differential equations is relatively young. However, a lot of papers of delay differential equations have been published in recent years, and its theoretical study has been matures today. Especially, the stability properties of delay differential equations are studied by some authors, who have investigated both their analytical and numerical aspects. This dissertation mainly deals with the numerical stability of block methods for two kinds of delay differential equations. Firstly, some backgrounds and applications of delay differential equations are presented. In fact, the study of delay differential equations is relatively new. It was not systematically analyzed until 1975. The main reason is that researchers considered the numerical treatment of delay differential equations similar to that of ordinary differential equations in early years. Therefore, it is not necessary to pay special attention to delay differential equations. Contrary to the common belief at that time, the numerical study of delay differential equations is much more complicated than that of ordinary differential equations. For example, even a direct discretization of a simple pantograph equation results in a variable order and variable coefficients linear difference equation. Hence, it is very meaningful to study the numerical analysis of delay differential equations. T
