* Why leadership is so important is that leadership can not only influence the environment, but can influence skill development and positive safety behaviors. * * * Responsible: The responsible person performs the activity or does the work. The person is referred to as having the “R” Accountable: The person who the organization will hold liable for the outcome of a particular activity or decision. The person with the “A” may also choose to take the “R” for completing the task, or may delegate the “R” to another party. Consultable : An individual with whom a project or decision is discussed prior to finalization. The person may have valuable input or not support a decision without this personal communication Informable: the informed party should be communicated * * Reducing injuries in any organization is a journey that requires a systems approach. Without a systems approach (on the left-hand side of the curve) companies tend to: Focus on conditions Dismiss best practices because they occur in a different industry Delegate responsibility to safety staff Introduce too much change, too quickly Fail to recognize barriers to change Fail to provide corrective action for unsafe activities Implement safety procedures that either don’t work, or aren’t used Build a safety system and then walk away Here is what we have discovered are the critical aspects of injury reduction as companies move from a management driven, control based approach to an interdependent culture, where safety becomes an integral business value and source of organizational pride.
