Abstract
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850~1894), the most famous novelist, essayist, poet and critic of Britain in the late 19th century, is one of the pioneers and representatives of Neo-Romantic literary trend. Stevenson?s novels are of versatile themes and sophisticated structure. His thriller and adventure novels possess creative and dramatic power. If Stevenson became known and popular by his first novel Treasure Island published in the year 1883, it was the allegorical story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that laid foundation for his status in English literature and marked the maturity of his writing skills and styles. With extraordinary imagination, Stevenson presents us with the double nature of man, showing his deep insight into human nature.
With profound theme, distinct perspective of human nature and superior writing skills, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has been explored by scholars from various angles of view combining literature, psychology, linguistic communication and medicine. However, most critics take the story just as a simplistic dichotomy of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, praising Henry Jekyll?s “good” and denouncing Edward Hyde?s “evil” while a comprehensive analysis of the model Jekyll and Hyde with “good vs. evil” character has been neglected. Besides, the reason why Stevenson created such a dual figure lacks further exploration and the origin of good and evil in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has also been ignored. In order to make up for these aspects which need further analysis, this research explores the true identities of Jekyll and Hyde and the relationship between them; Furthermore, the origin of the duality of good and evil is also dealt with.
This paper first discusses the essence of “good” and “evil” represented by Jekyll and Hyde, and then analyzes in depth the duality-of-good-and-evil thought of the work: there is no fundamental conflict between the “good” in Jekyll and the “evil” in Hyde. They are
