Because during your career, you ’re going to come across opportunities that can offer you
things that are very attractive to you. But these opportunities w ill also come w ith
big downsides too.

影响。
Take many internet company opportunities. The upsides can be huge, like faster career
development, greater job satisfaction, and chance to work in a fast-growth, innovative industry.
But there’s also less structure, fewer resources, and little training. And frankly, a greater
chance to be part of a failed situation.
例如在很多互联网公司中会遇到的机会。一方面好处是巨大的,比如更快的职业发展,更好的工作满意度,以

So I’ll to focus on weighing the downsides, in particular. When coaching candidates, I tell
them, ask yourself, “How much of what you ’re concerned about is . . .”

1) Temporary vs. long-term – For instance, after getting my MBA, I got an offer from the
Asia Pacific division of a big computer company, which fit my plans to work in China someday. But
the starting salary was pretty low. I remember the VP who hired me told me, “There will be many
chances for you to show me your value and performance to get promoted. Once you do, I promise
you’re going to be more than happy with what you make.” I thought about it, and accepted the
offer. Just over a year later, that’s what happened. I got promoted and a big salar
