Design Practices 3.1 Determining Winterization Requirements Winterization is a general term that applies to measures taken to prevent problems associated with design and operation of processing facilities in regions with cold climates. A number of undesirable effects may be experienced with equipment, piping, and instrumentation exposed to cold winter ambient conditions: ◼ Freezing or congealing of liquids ◼ Decrease flowability of liquid from an increase in viscosity ◼ Ice or hydrate formation in gas streams. ◼ Condensation of liquids from vapor streams ◼ Crystallization or precipitation of solids from liquid so
