“Society is Out There, organization in Here”: On the Perceptions of Corporate
Social Responsibility Held by Different Managerial Groups

The specifi purpose of this article is to explore the current perceptions of
managers concerning the corporate social responsibility program of their employing
organizations in order to discern what, if any, impact these program exert on the
organizational conditions of managerial agency. In doing so, the article aims to make
a contribution to the general debate between those who regard CSR primarily as a
pragmati response to external pressures (e.g. Roberts, 2001), and those who
perceive it to promise the possibility of meaningful change towards a more
enlightened management, involving a value-driven attempt at reforming corporate
practices, including the conditions of managerial activity (e.g. Weaver et al., 1999a).
Both analytical commentary concerning current CSR developments and debate
concerning the conceptual underpinnings of CSR tend to focus on the ‘corporation’
and associated policies and practices. The manager qua manager as the agent of
corporate bureaucracy is substantially missing from these a ounts. The point of
departure for this article therefore are the assumptions that the perceptions of
managers themselves are key to understanding the nature and purpose of specifi
CSR program and that a rigorous a ount of the actual corporate conditions of
managerial agency – particularly for those who have some involvement in the
execution of CSR strategy – are paramount to theory seeking to underpin CSR
