Analysis of the teaching material
What:
This lesson is chosen from Go for It, the first book of Grade 8, Unit5 Do you want to watch a game show? The topic of this unit is entertainment. And the function is to talk about preferences and make plans. It’s the fourth period of Unit 5, which focuses on Mickey Mouse, a symbol of American culture. The lesson is aimed at serving the function of reading comprehension.
Why:
By studying Mickey’s story, the purpose of this article is to help students learn the spirit of Mickey Mouse, know more about the background of Mickey and why people like him. What’s more, we will get a better understanding of the variety of culture.
How:
This passage is a typical narrative. Time order is also adopted. The writer explains an introduction of Mickey Mouse first, then tells us the reasons why Mickey Mouse is so popular and achievements Mickey Mouse made.
Analysis of learners
What they know:
The students are from Grade eight, they love watching cartoons and they are interested in this topic. They have read or written similar cartoon stories. So, they are willing to cooperate in class and love to share their ideas by simple expressions.
What they wonder:
They have their own thoughts and opinions about life and study, and they have mastered some basic reading skills. But they still lack of some skills to gather specific information they need and have difficulty in high- order thinking.
What they will learn:
After reading the passage, the students will learn the language, the type, the structure and how to write a passage. For thinking ability, I expect to foster their logical and critical thinking for life-long learning.
