The first part is a letter from a grandfather to his grandson explaining how a smoker becomes addicted to cigarettes and why he should give up. The second part gives advice about how to stop smoking. 2. The analysis of the students Students have a good attitude to learning and are enthusiastic about it. Most of them have already mastered some proper reading skills to get detailed information from the passage. But their ability to summarize the main idea and make comments is limited. Besides, most of them can’t express themselves confidently in English. 【Learning objectives】 1. By predicting according to the titles and skimming for the topic sentences, we can summarize the main idea of the passage. 2. By scanning for the key words, we can list the three ways people can become addicted to cigarettes and the harmful effects of smoking. 3. By doing a role play, we can use the new expressions to advise others to quit smoking and realize the importance of living a healthy life. 【The key and difficult learning points】 1. We can get useful information by using proper reading skills. 2.
