Afaintglimmerofoptimism.Fortheseventhyearinarow,wesurveyed6,000peopleinsomeofEurope’slargesteconomies(Germany,France,Italy,Spain,Poland,andAustria)totakethepulseonfutureprospects,policymakingandtheriseofAI.Althoughpessimistsstillpredominate,theirleadhasnarrowed

significantlycomparedtolastyear,from-23.0%to-8.3%.InGermany,this

figurehasfallenby17pps.Germanyistheonlycountryinoursurveywhere

assessmentsofthepresentandfuturedivergesignificantly,withthenet

percentagefallingfrom-22.6%to-11.9%.Thiscouldbeseenasatentativesignofanewbeginning.

Thegendersentimentgap.Onaverage,womenaresignificantlymore

pessimisticthanmenaboutthefuture,bothingeneralandpersonally.Overall,thegendergapamountsto11.8pps.Thisreflectsstructuralimpediments:

Despiteprogressinrecentyearstowardsreconcilingworkandfamilylife,

womenstillfacemoreobstaclesthanmenwhenitcomestoachievingtheir

goals.Coincidentallyornot,theaverageunadjustedgenderpaygapintheEUis12%.

Nogreenbacklash.Just23.6%ofrespondentsbelievethatEuropeshouldfollowPresidentTrump‘sshiftinclimatepolicy.Polandhadthehighestapprovalrating(30.5%),whileGermanyhadthelowest(19.2%).Conversely,thisalsomeans

thattheoverwhelmingmajorityfavorcontinuing–ifnotintensifying–Europe‘scurrentclimatepolicy.Overall,supportforEUclimatepolicyisgrowingasthefocusisshiftingfromemissionreductionstopromotingenergyindependence.
