Watchingthebehaviourandbodylanguageofzooanimalscouldbethekeytounderstandingandimprovingtheirwelfare,newresearchsuggests.Traditionally,zooshavefocusedonmorestraightforwardmeasuressuchaswhetheranimalsareeatingandsleeping.
Thenewreview,bytheUniversityofExeterandtheUniversityofWinchester,sayszooshavemadegreatimprovementsinrecentyears,butcloserobservationofanimalbehaviour—amethodcalledQualitativeBehaviouralAssessment,developedinfarming—couldshowevenmoreabouttheirstateofmind.
Ananimalspositioningofitsbody,facialmovementsandactivitylevelsareamongthethingsthatmighttellwhetheritisexcited,calm,interested,nervous,relaxed,etc.
“Zookeepersareknowledgeableabouttheiranimals,andtheywilloftenrecogniseananimalsstateofmindbyitsbehaviourandbodylanguage,”saidDr.PaulRose,oftheUniversityofExeter.
“Whatwearesuggestingisamorescientificmethodofthis,carriedoutovertime.”
“Certainbehaviourswillshowcertainmoods(情绪)inananimal,andweshouldbuildourknowledgeofthisfordifferentanimalsthatliveinzoos.Forexample,lionshavealotoffacialexpressions,andresearchontheseexpressionscouldhelpzoosunderstandtheanimalsstateofmind.Thisinformationcouldthenbeusedtoimprovewelfarebychangingdiets,feedingtimesoranynumberofotheraspectsofthewayanimalsarekept.”
Dr.RosecarriesoutmuchofhisresearchatWWTSlimbridgeWetlandCentre,andisnowexamininghowtheswans(天鹅)theremightshowtheirstateofmindthroughtheirbehaviouralexpression.
“Werelookingathowmuchtimetheyspendexploringtheirhabitat,whichcouldshowwhattheyrefeeling.”hesaid.“Whentheyreunsure,theyappeartomovelessandbemorecareful,anddrawtheirfeathers(羽毛)closetotheirbodies.”
