Thenewreview，bytheUniversityofExeterandtheUniversityofWinchester，sayszooshavemadegreatimprovementsinrecentyears，butcloserobservationofanimalbehaviour—amethodcalledQualitativeBehaviouralAssessment，developedinfarming—couldshowevenmoreabouttheirstateofmind．

Ananimalspositioningofitsbody，facialmovementsandactivitylevelsareamongthethingsthatmighttellwhetheritisexcited，calm，interested，nervous，relaxed，etc．

“Zookeepersareknowledgeableabouttheiranimals，andtheywilloftenrecogniseananimalsstateofmindbyitsbehaviourandbodylanguage，”saidDr．PaulRose，oftheUniversityofExeter．

“Whatwearesuggestingisamorescientificmethodofthis，carriedoutovertime．”

“Certainbehaviourswillshowcertainmoods(情绪)inananimal，andweshouldbuildourknowledgeofthisfordifferentanimalsthatliveinzoos．Forexample，lionshavealotoffacialexpressions，andresearchontheseexpressionscouldhelpzoosunderstandtheanimalsstateofmind．Thisinformationcouldthenbeusedtoimprovewelfarebychangingdiets，feedingtimesoranynumberofotheraspectsofthewayanimalsarekept．”

Dr．RosecarriesoutmuchofhisresearchatWWTSlimbridgeWetlandCentre，andisnowexamininghowtheswans(天鹅)theremightshowtheirstateofmindthroughtheirbehaviouralexpression．

“Werelookingathowmuchtimetheyspendexploringtheirhabitat，whichcouldshowwhattheyrefeeling．”hesaid．“Whentheyreunsure，theyappeartomovelessandbemorecareful，anddrawtheirfeathers(羽毛)closetotheirbodies．”
