Therefore, they created people’s feelings. As Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary defines,?“A number is a word or symbol that represents an amount or a quantity.”1 Now, it is not only a calculating tool but also a carrier of culture. As a kind of culture, numbers has permeated in every aspect of life and become an important part of the world. Each nation has its own numerical culture. However, by the different religion or mythology, traditional culture and homophony or synonymy, there are some discrepancies about numerical culture between East and West. By the increasing of communication with other countries, these discrepancies become a problem in translating. About this topic many scholars or theorists have done amount of researchers, such as Ren Ling’s Numbers in English and Chinese Culture Connotation and Their Translation; Chen Xue Fen’s The Differences of Numerical Culture and Translation between English and Chinese and so on. But, their research exist some shortcomings. This paper will base on cultural differences and the criteria of translation:?“faithfulness, smoothness” to further discuss the translation of numbers between East and West.II. Translation TheoryA.
