However, although the communication participants speak the same language, due to their different values, norms and ways of thinking, their communication usually fails to achieve the expected results and leads to the so called influence of cultural differences—the focus of this paper. As Morain puts it,“ being able to read and speak another language does not guarantee that understanding will take place”.1 Different language represents different culture. The manners and concepts that we accept in Chinese culture may be impolite in other cultures. For the lack of knowledge about western cultures, Chinese students tend to use our Chinese cultures, communicative modes and customs in cross-cultural communication, thus, resulting in many avoidable mistakes and misunderstandings. Chinese English learners have paid too much attention to the learning of language itself and neglected its actual application in social contexts. Plenty of examples have pointed out that expressions with Chinese way of thinking and English way of expressing do exist in daily life. Influences of cultural differences penetrate every aspect of our daily communication. Analyzing and studying the influence of these failures and finding out their reasons will facilitate our communication, improve our cultural sensitivity and better our cross-cultural communication competence. Therefore, this paper intends to make a brief analysis of the influence of culture differences encountered by Chinese and Americans and offers some practical solutions to them so as to help Chinese and Americans cross-cultural communication participants avoid these unnecessary mistakes.?1.
